Why Tattoo Deposits Exist (And Why They Matter)

Updated: Mar 26

At Golden Rule Tattoo Co., every tattoo starts long before the machine turns on. There’s time spent planning, designing, communicating, and preparing your appointment. One of the most common questions we get is:

“Why do I need to leave a deposit?”

Totally fair question — so let’s break it down.

Deposits Reserve Your Spot

A tattoo appointment is time set aside specifically for you.

When you book a session, that time slot becomes unavailable to anyone else. A deposit secures that appointment and ensures both you and your artist are committed to the scheduled time.

Think of it like reserving a seat at a special event — once it’s yours, we hold it for you.

Deposits Cover Design Time

Most tattoos require preparation before you ever walk in the door.

That can include:

  • Designing custom artwork

  • Researching references

  • Planning placement and sizing

  • Setting up your station and supplies

Your deposit helps compensate artists for the creative work that happens before the appointment even begins.

Deposits Help Prevent No-Shows

Unfortunately, no-shows happen in every industry. When someone doesn’t show up for a tattoo appointment, that time usually cannot be filled last minute.

Deposits help reduce no-shows and protect artists from losing entire workdays.

When you respect the appointment time, you’re also respecting the artist’s schedule and livelihood.

Deposits Go Toward Your Tattoo

This is important:

Your deposit is not an extra fee.

It is applied to the total cost of your tattoo on the day of your appointment.

So if your tattoo is $300 and your deposit was $100, you would simply pay the remaining $200 at your appointment.

Rescheduling

Life happens — we get it.

Most deposits can be transferred to a new appointment if enough notice is given (usually 48 hours). This allows us time to offer that slot to another client.

However, last-minute cancellations or no-shows usually mean the deposit is forfeited.

Respect Goes Both Ways

Deposits help keep things fair for everyone — artists and clients alike.

At Golden Rule Tattoo Co., we appreciate every person who trusts us with their skin and their ideas. Deposits simply help ensure we can give each tattoo the time, attention, and preparation it deserves.
